A fire tore through a seven-story building in Calcutta killing 24 people, including two victims who jumped to their deaths as onlookers crowded the area, officials said Wednesday.
The death toll from Tuesday's blaze was initially six, but firefighters later discovered 18 more bodies inside, said Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty.
About 20 people were injured in the fire in the bustling eastern Indian city.
Police were investigating the cause of the blaze, which was believed to have started in an elevator, police officer Javed Shamim said.
