Despite the large amount of research that has been carried out on peptides and proteins in the past 20 years or so, there are still relatively few of these types of compounds in use as drugs. There are many reasons for this, several of which are discussed in this book.
It is amazing that any peptide or protein can be used as a drug with the multitude of physiological barriers (in vivo degradation and poor absorption, for example) that oppose their use. However, such is the potential of peptides and proteins for therapeutic use that these problems are gradually being overcome.
